I caught up with Danny Rubin for a Facebook Live session and got a valuable glimpse into the creative writing process. Danny’s expertise spans public relations and communication. He channels his background and experience into a solid body of work to help people write more effective emails in his book, Wait, How Do I Write This Email. He explained to me how to get distribution for a body of work as a self-published author.
We talked about his journey and the preparation involved. This always gets glossed over in mainstream reporting and blogging but it is an important part of the process for anyone that’s creating something and looking to get it in to the hands of other people who could benefit from it. I learned about the public relations process and how the industry is changing. He gives great advice and is a really good listener as well.
We talked about the ways a new author might organize their work to complete a book. I’ve summarized my takeaways from our Facebook Live Session below.
1. Take time to blog your table of contents. I really like this tactic. It is something that anyone can do to consistently grow their content and create the content for their book at the same time. There’s no excuse to getting started on this. If someone wants to write a book they can get real time feedback on what value they add through blogging the information to be included in their book. Although they may modify and edit the content of the book when it gets published, it is still a good way to get the words on the paper and to get a good indicator for comments and what people are looking to hear about from you.
2. Leverage business-to-business marketing. This is a big topic of discussion whether you are creating a new book or selling a fashion bag. The decision to sell to businesses or direct to consumer is always a strategic choice that the entrepreneur will face. Many opinions will differ on this. I learned a lot from Danny’s perspective on how he approaches organizations to be become a vendor.
3. Leverage trade and related associations. Danny landed his book on the circuit with many well-frequented conferences and put his book in the hands of the right people that can get the word out about his book. The small business owner and or author has the best chance to succeed when they can get more awareness for the product or book with people that potentially can use it. Danny’s work embodies this and shows the steps that a person can take to get the job done.
In summary when writing emails and books we can do what we think will work or we can use proven templates and strategies to improve our effectiveness. If you are an entrepreneur, recent college grad, or just someone who is on a mission to improve yourself this is a great investment to make.
